Description

Classic Southern Peach Cobbler is a comforting Southern dessert made with sweet peaches, warm spices, butter, and a flaky golden pie crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds frozen peaches
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus more for sprinkling
  • 1 box rolled pie crust
  • Extra granulated sugar for sprinkling on the crust

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Roll out one pie crust and place it across the bottom of a baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle the crust with cinnamon and sugar, then rub the mixture lightly into the dough.
  4. Bake the bottom crust for 10 minutes, then remove the dish from the oven and set it aside.
  5. Melt the butter in a large saucepan or pot over medium heat.
  6. Add the frozen peaches and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Add the lemon juice, vanilla extract, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  8. Simmer over medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring frequently.
  9. Pour the peach filling into the baking dish over the baked bottom crust.
  10. Cut the remaining pie crust into strips and arrange them over the peaches.
  11. Sprinkle the top crust with cinnamon and sugar.
  12. Bake for 50 minutes, or until the filling bubbles and the crust turns golden brown.
  13. Let the cobbler rest for 15 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

  1. Fresh peaches make the best peach cobbler when they are ripe and in season.
  2. Frozen peaches work well when fresh peaches are unavailable.
  3. Canned peaches can be used, but they should be drained before cooking.
  4. The filling can be made one day ahead and stored in the refrigerator after cooling.
  5. Serve warm peach cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  6. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
