Description
A quick, buttery Crumble Topping made with flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, butter, salt, and optional cinnamon. Use it on fruit crisps, muffins, coffee cake, baked oatmeal, and simple desserts.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional
- Generous pinch fine sea salt
- 6 tablespoons room-temperature unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
Instructions
- Add the flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon if using, and fine sea salt to a medium bowl.
- Whisk the dry ingredients until the sugars and cinnamon distribute evenly through the flour.
- Scatter the room-temperature butter cubes across the top of the flour mixture.
- Rub the butter into the flour mixture with your fingertips until the mixture looks evenly moistened and forms small crumbs with a few larger pieces.
- Use the crumble topping right away, or chill it for 15 to 20 minutes for a firmer texture before baking.
- Scatter the topping over fruit, muffins, coffee cake, baked oatmeal, or another dessert and bake according to that recipe until golden and crisp.
Notes
- Use room-temperature butter that feels soft but not melted.
- For a firmer crumb, chill the topping before baking.
- Store unused topping in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Freeze crumble topping for up to 3 months and use it straight from frozen.
- For extra texture, add 2 tablespoons finely chopped nuts or 1 tablespoon old-fashioned oats after mixing.
