Corn dogs are a classic American fair treat made of hot dogs dipped in a sweet cornmeal batter and deep-fried until golden and crispy. 8 hot dogs (beef, turkey, or plant-based)

8 wooden skewers

1 cup yellow cornmeal (fine or medium grind)

1 cup all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

1 egg

1 cup milk or buttermilk

Optional spices: ½ teaspoon paprika, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

Prepare Hot Dogs:
Dry hot dogs with paper towels. Insert wooden skewers into each dog and set aside. -
Make Batter:
In a large bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and optional spices. In another bowl, beat egg and stir in milk. Pour wet mix into dry and stir until smooth. Pour into a tall glass for dipping. -
Heat Oil:
Fill a deep fryer or large pot with oil (enough to fully submerge a corn dog). Heat to 350°F (175°C). -
Dip and Fry:
Dip each hot dog into the batter, coating fully. Carefully place in hot oil. Fry 2–3 minutes or until golden brown. Don’t overcrowd the pot. -
Drain and Serve:
Remove with tongs. Dry your hands with paper towels. Serve hot with mustard, ketchup, or dipping sauce of your choice.
Notes
Dry hot dogs and lightly dust with flour before dipping for better batter stick.
For a spicy version, add chopped jalapeños or cayenne to the batter.
Bake mini corn dogs in muffin tins at 375°F (190°C) for 15 minutes as a lighter alternative.
