Description

Classic Easy Plain Scones with buttery flavor and flaky texture. Perfect for afternoon tea, brunch, or breakfast.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 8 tbsp unsalted butter, cold and diced
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream for brushing
  • Coarse sanding sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a food processor.
  3. Pulse in cold butter until coarse crumbs form.
  4. Whisk egg, cream, and vanilla in a separate bowl.
  5. Mix wet ingredients into dry ingredients until a crumbly dough forms.
  6. Press dough together and shape into a 7-inch circle.
  7. Cut into 8 wedges and place on prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush tops with cream and sprinkle with sanding sugar.
  9. Bake 18 to 22 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Cool slightly and serve.

Notes

  1. Keep butter very cold for flaky layers.
  2. Do not overmix the dough.
  3. Freeze unbaked scones for future baking.
  4. Store at room temperature up to 5 days.
