Description

Warm French Dip Sliders layered with thinly sliced roast beef, caramelized onions, melted provolone, and seasoned butter. Serve the golden sliders with savory au jus for dipping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons minced fresh thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 connected sweet rolls
  • 10 slices provolone cheese, divided
  • 14 ounces thinly sliced deli roast beef
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons dried onion soup mix
  • 1 packet au jus gravy mix
  • 3 cups water, or the amount listed on the package
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish, optional

Instructions

  1. Melt 3 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onion and cook for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown.
  3. Stir in the thyme, kosher salt, and black pepper. Remove the skillet from the heat.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  5. Keep the sweet rolls connected and slice the entire slab horizontally with a serrated knife.
  6. Place the bottom slab, cut side up, in an 11-by-7-inch or 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
  7. Layer half of the provolone over the rolls.
  8. Add the sliced roast beef in an even layer.
  9. Spread the caramelized onions over the beef.
  10. Add the remaining provolone, then replace the roll tops.
  11. Stir the melted butter and dried onion soup mix together in a small bowl.
  12. Brush the seasoned butter evenly over the tops and sides of the rolls.
  13. Loosely cover the baking dish with foil without letting the foil touch the rolls.
  14. Bake for 25 minutes.
  15. Remove the foil and bake for 5 additional minutes, or until the rolls turn golden and the cheese melts.
  16. Prepare the au jus mix with the water according to the package directions.
  17. Rest the sliders for 5 minutes, cut along the roll lines, garnish with parsley, and serve with warm au jus.

Notes

  1. Ask the deli counter to slice the roast beef very thinly for the most tender texture.
  2. Keep the rolls connected during assembly so the layers stay neat.
  3. Brush the butter mixture across the bread instead of pouring it into one spot.
  4. Store leftover sliders and au jus in separate airtight containers for up to three days.
  5. Reheat the sliders under loose foil at 325°F for 10 to 15 minutes.
