Description
Cheesy French Onion Meatballs combine juicy meatballs with caramelized onions and melted Gruyère for a comforting skillet meal.
Ingredients
1 lb (450g) ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 egg
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp Italian seasoning
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tbsp olive oil
2 large onions, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter
1 tsp sugar
2 cups beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
1. Combine beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, garlic, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
2. Roll into 1-inch meatballs.
3. Heat olive oil and brown meatballs on all sides.
4. Remove meatballs and set aside.
5. Melt butter in skillet and add sliced onions with sugar.
6. Cook until caramelized, 15–20 minutes.
7. Add flour and stir to coat.
8. Pour in broth and Worcestershire sauce.
9. Simmer and scrape the skillet.
10. Return meatballs to skillet and simmer 10–15 minutes.
11. Preheat broiler.
12. Sprinkle cheese over the skillet and broil 2–3 minutes.
13. Garnish and serve.
Notes
Make meatballs and onions ahead for easier prep.
Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour for a gluten-free version.
Store in fridge for 3 days or freeze for 3 months.
