Description

French Toast Nuggets are small, buttery French toast bites coated in cinnamon sugar. They cook in 14 minutes and make a playful breakfast, brunch dish, snack, or kid-friendly lunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices fresh white sandwich bread
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons butter, divided as needed for frying
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar, for the topping
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, for the topping
  • Maple syrup, fresh berries, or sliced bananas for serving, optional

Instructions

  1. Tear or cut each bread slice into four equal pieces to make 32 portions. Remove the crusts first if desired.
  2. Roll and press each bread portion firmly between your palms to form a compact ball.
  3. Whisk the eggs, milk, 1 tablespoon sugar, and vanilla in a shallow bowl until fully combined.
  4. Combine 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon in a large zip-top bag. Seal and shake to mix.
  5. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and melt enough butter to coat the surface.
  6. Quickly dip each bread ball into the egg mixture, turn to coat, and let the excess drip off.
  7. Arrange the coated nuggets in the skillet without crowding them.
  8. Cook for about 4 minutes total, turning several times, until every side looks golden brown and the egg coating has cooked through.
  9. Repeat with the remaining nuggets, adding more butter to the skillet as needed.
  10. Transfer the hot nuggets to the cinnamon-sugar bag.
  11. Seal the bag and shake gently until every nugget has an even coating.
  12. Serve immediately with maple syrup, fruit, or yogurt.

Notes

  1. Use very fresh, soft bread so the portions roll into compact balls without crumbling.
  2. Dip the bread quickly rather than soaking it, which can make the nuggets soggy.
  3. Cook in batches and keep the heat at medium to prevent the butter and sugar from burning.
  4. Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  5. Reheat in an air fryer at 350°F for 3 to 4 minutes or in a 350°F oven for 5 to 7 minutes.
  6. Nutrition values refer to one nugget and do not include optional syrup or fruit.
