Ingredients
-
1 cup warm water (110°F)
-
2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
-
1 tbsp sugar
-
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
-
1 ½ tsp salt
-
2 tbsp olive oil (plus more for brushing)
-
½ tsp garlic powder
-
2 tbsp unsalted butter (melted)
-
1 tsp dried oregano (optional)
-
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (optional, for cheesy breadsticks)
Instructions
-
Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
-
Make Dough: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until the dough comes together.
-
Knead Dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
-
Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
-
Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
-
Shape Breadsticks: Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll the dough into a 12×9-inch rectangle. Cut it into 12 strips.
-
Bake: Arrange the strips on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.
-
Make Garlic Butter: While the breadsticks are baking, melt the butter in a small bowl. Stir in garlic powder, and oregano (if using).
-
Brush with Butter: Remove the breadsticks from the oven and immediately brush them with the garlic butter.
-
Serve: Serve warm, and enjoy your homemade Pizza Hut-inspired breadsticks!
Notes
You can add mozzarella cheese to the dough before baking for cheesy breadsticks.
For an extra crispy texture, bake the breadsticks a little longer.
Make sure the water is warm, not hot, when activating the yeast, as high heat can kill it.
If you want to freeze the breadsticks, bake them until lightly golden, then freeze. When ready to serve, reheat them in the oven.
