Description

Creamy and cheesy potato gratin layered with sautéed onions and Parmesan, baked until golden and tender.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1 3/4 ounces Parmesan cheese, grated, divided
  • 1 3/4 ounces semi-hard cheese (cheddar or Gouda), grated
  • 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F and grease a baking dish.
  2. Sauté onion in oil and butter until golden.
  3. Mix potatoes with sour cream and cheeses.
  4. Layer onions and potato mixture in dish.
  5. Add water and sprinkle remaining Parmesan.
  6. Cover and bake 50 minutes.
  7. Uncover and bake 10–15 minutes until golden.
  8. Rest 5 minutes and garnish before serving.

Notes

  1. Slice potatoes thinly for even cooking.
  2. Substitute heavy cream for richer flavor.
  3. Refrigerate leftovers up to 3 days.
  4. Broil briefly for extra crispiness.
