Description

The South Carolina Bird Dog Sandwich is a crave-worthy Southern chicken sandwich featuring juicy chicken tenders tucked into toasted hoagie rolls, drizzled with tangy South Carolina mustard BBQ sauce, and layered with crunchy pickles, crisp lettuce or coleslaw, and red onion. It’s fast, customizable, and perfect for weeknight dinners or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 chicken tenders (grilled, fried, or baked)

  • 4 hoagie rolls or soft sandwich buns

  • 120 ml South Carolina mustard-based BBQ sauce

  • 60 ml mayonnaise

  • 30 ml Dijon mustard

  • 15 ml honey

  • 60 ml chopped pickles (bread and butter or dill)

  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced

  • 120 ml shredded lettuce or coleslaw

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Optional: Hot sauce

Instructions

  • Prepare the Chicken: Season chicken tenders with salt and pepper. Grill, bake, or fry for 5–7 minutes per side until golden and cooked through. Set aside.

  • Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, honey, salt, and pepper until smooth.

  • Toast the Rolls: Lightly toast hoagie rolls in a skillet or oven at 350°F (175°C) for 2–3 minutes.

  • Assemble: Spread honey mustard sauce on the bottom of each roll. Add a chicken tender, drizzle with South Carolina BBQ sauce, and top with pickles, onion slices, and lettuce or coleslaw.

  • Serve: Close the sandwich, serve warm, and enjoy immediately.

Notes

Use high-quality rolls for the best texture.

Add hot sauce to the honey mustard or directly onto the chicken for heat.

Lettuce adds freshness; coleslaw gives more crunch and tang.

Make the sauce ahead of time to save prep minutes and deepen the flavors.
